Jannie Dyason is one of our diving friends from Cape Town. Here is his story…
What level diver are you?
How old were you when you first qualified as a Scuba Diver?
Why did you learn to scuba dive?
I always snorkeled in the rock pools at our beach house as a kid, where my love for the underwater world began. Diving gives me the sense of adventure I had as a child.
What is it that makes scuba diving so special to you?
I think divers are a special breed of people. You can always find them at parties swopping stories of their adventures and travels.
Tell us about the most memorable dive you have ever done?
One of my favourite dives must be Manta Reef in Mozambique. Seeing those huge Manta Rays gliding overhead and playing in the bubbles is an awesome experience. What made even more special: I got to share it with my brother, who is now also a keen diver.
If you could be a marine animal, what would you be – and why?
A Nudi (Nudibranch) – all the girls go crazy when they see one! Just kidding! Would love to be a blacktip reef shark, effortlessly gliding through the water.
What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you whilst scuba diving?
I was still doing my dive training in PE when the visibility was so bad on our wreck dive, I only saw the wreck when I swam straight into it!
If you could choose anyone (non-divers included) to be your dive buddy, who would it be and why?
My girlfriend is thinking of doing her dive course. Would be awesome to share my love for the underwater world with her.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of doing a scuba diving course?
Don’t buy any equipment before you do your training. You can rent all you need and thereafter decide which type of fins/masks etc you prefer. As for doing the course… Just do it already!
If you could send just one important message to all scuba divers across the world, what would it be?
If you haven’t dived South Africa, you are missing out! Come see for yourself!
